x Sincoregelia ‘Outrageous’

First, some new additions to South Florida Plant Sales page. OFE in Homestead has an “After the Redland” plant sale this weekend (May 27-28). The Audubon Society has a native plant sale on June 3. Check out the rain barrel class and sale. On July 9-10, Fairchild has the Mango festival, where varieties of mango trees will be for sale.

x Sincoregelia ‘Outrageous’ is a hybrid bromeliad. The vendor recommended planting it in full sun. The normal advice on bromeliads is to plant them in good draining soil- which in South Florida means a deep hole, and lots of perlite. Creating any elevation can improve drainage.

The leaves have marginal spines. The leaf’s center is a mix of red and green colors. Other images from Tropiflora show a more greenish center. The bromeliad should stay small (< 24″ in diameter). The white marble rocks combine nicely with the plant.

Sincoregelia is a cross between Sincoraea and and Neoregelia. Species of Sincoraea were initially discovered in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia in Brazil. Neoregelia is also from South America. ‘Outrageous’ refers to the cultivar.

The creators of the new cultivars have really been over the top on bromeliad names. We now have x Sincoregelia ‘Cosmic Blast’ and ‘High Octane’, Neoregelia ‘Shark Bait’, ‘Blueberry Muffin’, ‘Petit Minou’ and ‘Hannibal Lecter’ (wow). The Tropiflora website has images of each of these bromeliads.

Happy Gardening,

Dave
