Kaempferia pulchra ‘Shazam’ (Peacock Ginger)

I’ve added a link the Fairchild Garden member sale, this next Saturday, May 13. Usually other vendors are present. These are plants which you are not going to find at the big box stores.

My Kaempferia collection is growing! This is a K. pulchra for sure, but it wasn’t easy getting the cultivar name right. Peacock ginger is a commercial name for many Kaempferias, so it isn’t a particularly useful Google search word. Others call this K. elegans ‘Shazam’ and I am not one to bicker over species names. The common name is given on one website as Resurrection Lily ‘Bicolor’ or ‘Alva’.

Kaempferias are called resurrection plants meaning they die off in the winter months, and return in the spring. Curcumas and other gingers do the same thing. During the winter, they do not need care. They are resting.

I have previously posted K. pulchra ‘Silver Spot’ and included in that image Kaempferia elegans commonly referred to as Satin Checks which will spread and look very attractive. I’ve posted images of K. candida which now is reclassified as Curcuma candida. They have just recently poked up, along with K. augustifolio ‘Laos silver stripe’

My search for more Kaempferias continues. It seems I have to look under both K. elegans and pulchra, which is fine with me. “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” thank you Shakespeare, for clearing this up.

Happy Gardening,

Dave
