Just updated the Plant Shows and Sales page for January-May 2023. I’ll likely add more as I check out gardens on the west side and central Florida.
The dwarf pineapple needs the same care as normal pineapples, which is really a sunny location. They will do fine in partial shade, but I would not expect it would fruit as often. The image above is from last summer, and now it has produced a pup which I will separate soon. They are really perfect patio plants.
The pineapple are tiny, so as far as I’m concerned, they are inedible. I’m not going to dissect one, to find out if there is a tiny part that can be eaten. I think the leaves are beautiful.
The pineapple is from the Bromeliad family and originates in south Brazil along the Paraguay border. When Europeans discovered pineapples, it became a big hit among royalty, initially in the Netherlands in the 1700’s. Being rich helped with the cost of constructing and maintaining heated greenhouses.
One website recommends liquid fertilizer for better growth. My friend suggests a 1/4 strength weekly (or less as in my case) spraying during the warmer months. They do very well without much care.
Happy Gardening,
Dave

Thanks, Dave. I learn a lot when I read your posts.
