Lignum vitae (Guaiacum guatemalense)

lignum vitae

There are a number of species of Lignum vitae.  This is the very hard to find one.  It  produces only white flowers.  The leaves look just like the most common species  (Guaiacum sanctum) which produces many beautiful small blue flowers.

This tree was bought at a plant sale at Fairchild Gardens.  Their G. guatemalense almost never produces any flowers, but just a couple of weeks ago (mid March), I spotted a couple of white flowers on their tree.  I discovered white flowers on mine.  Got no seeds.

In comparison to the normal Lignum vitae, the main trunk begins to branch out at about a foot off the ground.  My tree is about 6′ tall.   I don’t know how to get more flowers.

I’ve also planted a Guaiacum officinale, but I’ve had no luck in getting it to flower. All suggests are appreciated.

  1. Hey man, nice blog. Guiacum sanctum has a white flowered variant here in the Bahamas, but it’s a recessive trait and doesn’t come true from seed (decade long lesson).

Are you sure this isn’t that?
