Kaempferia candida

This is one of the first Kaempferias to poke up around May.  It hides its flowers right underneath.  I understand that it was recently renamed as a curcuma.  So, Curcuma candida or K. candida, still a  pretty cool ginger.

  1. I bought several packets of rhizomes at a “Ginger Fest” held at Fairchild Garden about 30 years ago. I have given away one plant to the very best nursery for gingers and other rare plants, Gardino Nursery, but they are not selling it. I will donate another plant to Fairchild Garden and perhaps they can propagate it and eventually sell it. Searching the internet is very difficult as candida is used as a medicine.

    • This would be difficult to send, but I am glad you sent me this information. When people harvest the flowers for food, then the plant loses it’s ability to reproduce. So, this is likely the reason why it is scarce in SE Asia.
