Vriesea splendens (Flaming sword bromeliad)

Upcoming plant sales and other news. August 27, the Tropical Fruit and Vegetable Society of the Redland will hold a plant auction to benefit the Fruit and Spice Park. Very worthy cause because the park is really a unique gem in Miami. See link from TGVSR. Mounts will have two sales, September 20-21 and November 1-2. Two palms and cycads sales. Oct 11 in West Palm Beach and Nov 8-9 at Fairchild in Coral Gables. See webpage on plant sales.

Now, to Vrieseas. They are May to June bloomers. Home Depot and other nurseries are selling them. The Vrieseas all seem to all at once, as if they are secretly communicating. The sword on this one measured 29.” Most of the small yellow flowers are gone. This is another flame sword bromeliad, in a more mature state, turning green at the base. The sword measured 36″ which Is pretty good, as I’ve read they can get to about 1 meter (39″). They are sold as house plants, but in Miami we can easily grow them outdoors, in shady locations.

There are a whole slew of cultivars or hybrids. V. ‘favoreit’ is one with more yellow flowers.

I will post images of V. kupperiana in my next post. These bromeliads really survive on neglect. All they need is shade and water in the center of the plant.

Happy gardening.

Dave
