Calyptrocalyx albertisianus

Please see the updated list of fall plant sales. There are several new additions and I am always looking to add to the list. Beginning in the last week of September, I have listed a plant sale for just about every weekend, through November.

On to the Calyptrocalyx, which isn’t difficult to grow. The new leaf opens as an amazing solid red then over the next couple of weeks, turns to dark green. So, the above image shows the leaf midway between red and green. It’s been about 4 years since I planted it out, and I knew it was a Calyptrocalyx, just didn’t remember the species until the new leaf came out.

Palm is from the lowland rainforests of New Guinea. So, it needs a shady location, wet soil and humid conditions. It is a slow grower, My palm is about 5 ft tall. It can grow to 15 – 20 ft tall according to palm textbooks.

It is named after the Italian naturalist and explorer Luigi D’Albertis who made great advances in exploring New Guinea. Unfortunately, his brutality against the natives, made his expeditions more like the exploits of the Spanish conquistadors.
