Geonoma atrovirens is not an easy palm to grow. Wet conditions, good drainage and full shade are necessary conditions. This one has been in the pot for at least 5 years. The leaves are very dark green and a bit greyish, but never black. It has a very pretty red new flush. It is native to western extent of the Amazon basin, near Peru and Ecuador, so it is definitely an understorey plant in a mountainous rainforest. It is still in the pot, and I may plant it out. Getting good drainage will be challenging. I’ve seen this in a pot, but never in a garden. Definitely could use some slow release fertilizer.
